What You Will Learn in This Episode

  • Aubree Felderhoff says leaving a home is not required to heal, and she has had more clients stay and remediate than leave entirely.
  • Aubree shares that after her family left their first moldy home and started over, she still chose to stay and remediate her current home through three remediations rather than leave again.
  • The first step Aubree recommends is getting the facts on the home, including where the moisture is coming from and the extent of the mold present.
  • Aubree advises figuring out what steps are needed to fully remediate and mitigate the problem, then what is needed to prevent moisture and mold from returning.
  • Aubree recommends starting with body testing, such as her testing bundle, to see if mold symptoms are showing up before investigating the home itself.
  • Aubree explains that anxiety about losing your home is often based on future what ifs, and that gathering facts is how to interrupt that fear loop.

Questions This Episode Answers

Do I have to move out of my house to recover from mold exposure symptoms?

Not necessarily. I have clients who remediate and stay in their homes and heal there, and it is actually more common than people think. It really depends on the facts of your specific situation, which is why figuring out what is actually happening in the home comes before deciding anything about staying or leaving.

How do I know if I need to leave my home because of mold?

You will not know until you get the facts, so that is always the first step. Find out where the moisture is coming from, how extensive the mold is, what remediation would involve, and whether the problem can actually be prevented from coming back. Once you have that clear picture, you can decide whether staying and fixing it or leaving feels right for you.

I'm scared to even test my home for mold because I don't want to find out we have to leave. Is that normal?

Yes, that is a completely normal reaction, and I have been there myself. A lot of that fear is based on future what ifs rather than actual facts, which is exactly why avoiding testing keeps you stuck in anxiety instead of giving you a real path forward.

What's the very first step I should take if I think mold might be making me sick?

Start by testing your body to see how it is responding to mold, since that gives you a clear picture of whether mold is likely behind your symptoms. From there, if it points to exposure, you move on to getting the facts about your home itself, like where the moisture and mold are coming from and how extensive it is.

Did you ever have to leave your own home because of mold?

Yes, I left a brand new dream home with my family after we had done everything possible to fix it and were completely worn down. We left our belongings behind too, because the thought of bringing anything from that home into our next one felt like too much.

If I remediate my home, is it possible to actually stay and heal there?

Yes, it is absolutely possible, and in my own case it is what I ultimately chose. My current home has gone through three remediations, and even though the first one felt overwhelming, we decided to stay, remediate, and make sure the home was safe before moving forward with healing there.

How do I stop spiraling about losing my home every time I think about mold testing?

Recognize that the spiral is fear based and rooted in what ifs rather than facts, and catch yourself before it takes hold again. Shift your focus to gathering real information about your body and your home instead, since that question does not need to cross your mind until you actually have facts in front of you.

What questions should I be asking about my home once I suspect mold is a problem?

Ask where the moisture is coming from, whether there is mold present and how extensive it is, what steps would be needed to fully remediate it, and how to prevent moisture and mold from returning. Once you have answers to those questions, you have a clear map to decide whether to stay and fix the home or to leave.

Aubree Felderhoff: Welcome back to Mold Free Mom. And I am so excited if you're new here that you're joining me because today is a little bit different than most of the previous episodes I've done. We are going to be discussing one question that I have seen over and over flooding my inbox, flooding my DMs. It's what I hear from people when I do discovery calls or lab consultations, And the question is: do I have to leave my home in order to heal from mold? And I know that most people are asking this because they're panicked. They're picturing losing their home. Sometimes it's a generational home. They're losing their stuff. And of course, this is a normal reaction. It's scary and it's traumatic to consider that. Looking into mold being at the root cause of all of your symptoms doesn't just mean that you have a diagnosis and a path forward, but it also requires you to investigate where that exposure is coming from. And for a lot of us, it's most likely the home where we spend the majority of our time, where our family sleeps and eats and plays together. It's a scary thought. And I want to first start off by telling you, I've been on both sides of this. And so I understand if this is something you're dealing with and it's in the back of your mind, and maybe you're even avoiding doing the testing because you don't really want the answer that then may lead you to have to consider: do I have to leave my home? I get it, guys. I get it. I've been someone that was so sick in my home, my brand new dream home with my family, that we ended up leaving that home and leaving all of our things behind. We were so done fighting. We had done everything possible there was to do. And the thought of bringing anything from the last home that was slowly poisoning us over from my family was too much. So we got rid of it all and we started over. And guess what? I've been in this home where we've now had three remediations. And the very first thought that hit me, the very first remediation in this home was, I can't imagine leaving this home and starting over again. The thought of it was exhausting. I felt as if 5,000 houses fell on me. Considering having to go through all of that again. And so we made the decision that we weren't going to. We were going to stay. We were going to remediate. We were going to make sure. That the home was safe for us to heal in. And it was. So it's possible, absolutely it's possible. And in fact, it's more common that I have clients that stay in their homes and they're able to remediate and heal and move on with their lives and not live in fear. I've also had clients who have chosen to leave their homes. how do you know where you even fall in that camp? The first step that you would want to take is getting the facts on the home. A lot of our anxiety around this subject. Is based on futuristic what ifs, right? And that's kind of what anxiety is. It's looking at the future and saying, what if, what if, what if. So in order to stop that, to stop that spiral, the very first thing you need to do is to find out what is going on within the home. And that's really finding where the moisture is coming from. If there's mold in the home, the extent of the mold, What steps need to be taken in order to fully remediate and mitigate this problem? And then how do we prevent the moisture and the mold from coming back? until we have those facts lined out in front of you, the idea, the question of, am I gonna have to leave my home? Am I gonna have to lose everything and my stuff and find a new home? And is this normal? That doesn't even need to cross your mind because it's not helping you at this point. And it's fear-based and it puts you right back into a loop and into a cycle of being scared and being in fight and flight. And that's something that we work on a lot within my program is getting us out of that dysregulated nervous system loop. But this is an easy thing for you to catch. If this is something that's been spiraling in your head, not allowing it to have another foothold until you gather information. And so instead of worrying about am I going to lose my home, let's first get the facts. If you haven't done testing on your body to see if mold is behind the symptoms, go get my testing bundle and start there. That gives you a clear picture of what is going on in your body and how your body is responding to its current environment. And from there, if it's showing that you most likely are being exposed and maybe in your home, then you want to get the facts on the home. Where is the exposure coming from? How big is it? Why is it happening? And what can we do to fix it? And once we get all of the facts in a row. And we have a clear map and a clear vision of what is actually happening within not just your home, but your environment, then you take the next step towards deciding: do I choose to stay in the home and follow the plan to fix it? Or would I feel more comfortable exiting the home? All right, guys, I hope that this was helpful. It gave you something to think about. If you are someone that's stuck in that fear loop, remember, it's completely normal. Nothing about this is easy. Nothing about this is fun or something that any of us would have picked for ourselves. But I can tell you that this is not something that you have to stay trapped in. And so go ahead and take that first step. We'll see you next time on Mold Free Mom. Aubree Felderhoff

Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner | Mold Recovery Concierge | Certified Primal Health Coach | Master Personal Trainer

Aubree spent 12 years and more than $250,000 searching for answers to a mystery chronic illness that 30-plus doctors couldn't solve. The first culprit was a mycotoxin-overloaded home that triggered a cascade of symptoms nobody could trace back to the source. After finally identifying the connection, remediating, and rebuilding her health, she faced a second exposure years later when water damage in her next home brought the symptoms flooding back.

That second experience is what shaped everything. She found a physician who understood antifungal treatment, completed neuroplasticity training, and fully recovered. Having navigated mold illness twice, from two different sources, she understands both how it starts and how it ends.

Aubree is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP), a Certified Primal Health Coach, NASM Certified Trainer, and Cooper Clinic Certified. Before mold illness defined her life, she spent 14 years in elite fitness as a national champion collegiate gymnast. She brings that same discipline and evidence-based approach to mold recovery, helping families get clear answers faster, without the decade of wrong turns she endured.
