97 | Mold Q&A: Why Do Mold Symptoms Get Worse During Detox? 3 Reasons You’re Not Getting Better

November 3, 20267 min 35sEpisode 97

This episode answers why mold recovery symptoms can worsen even when you are doing everything right, and the answer comes down to three variables: continued exposure, detox pathways not fully open, or a nervous system stuck in fight or flight. Host Aubree Felderhoff, Mold Illness Recovery Specialist, walks through each possibility and explains why feeling worse is a clue to adjust rather than a sign of failure.

What You Will Learn in This Episode

  • Feeling worse during recovery often points to one of three variables: continued exposure, moving too fast with detox, or a dysregulated nervous system.
  • Check your living situation for continued exposure, including contaminated items that were not cleaned or a missed step in a remediation protocol.
  • Make sure your detox pathways are fully open before pushing hard to eliminate toxins, or your body can get clogged up and you end up feeling worse.
  • A nervous system stuck in fight, flight, or fawn triggers a constant cortisol dump and will stop the body from prioritizing healing and eliminating toxins.
  • Strong vagal nerve toning and nervous system regulation are part of putting your body in a safe, primed position to eliminate toxins.
  • View worsening symptoms as clues to adjust your approach rather than evidence that you are failing at recovery.

“Feeling worse, it isn't a sign that you're failing. It's just a sign that you need to adjust.”

“The body is not going to prioritize healing and eliminating toxins and moving back into balance if you are essentially telling your body that you're running from a tiger.”

“If you can begin to view these signs and these symptoms as clues in your journey to healing, it will really help you to take the emotional response out of this.”

Questions This Episode Answers

Why do I feel worse during mold detox than when I started?

Feeling worse usually points to one of three things: continued exposure, moving too fast with detox before your pathways are open, or a nervous system stuck in fight or flight. It is not a sign that you are failing, it is a sign that something needs to be adjusted. I went through this myself and spent a lot of time blaming small things like a candle before I realized it was one of these bigger patterns.

How do I know if I'm still being exposed to mold even after remediation?

If you are doing everything right but not making progress, continued exposure is one of the first things to rule out. This can mean active mold still in the space, or contaminated items that were never properly cleaned, or a missed step in the remediation process. It is worth taking a step back and really looking at the facts of your living situation rather than assuming you are doing something wrong.

What does it mean if my detox pathways aren't open?

It means your body is trying to eliminate toxins faster than it actually can process them, which leads to feeling worse instead of better. I see this a lot with people who get out of exposure and then get aggressive with detox before making sure elimination, lymphatic flow, and the other pathways are actually working. Your body ends up unable to keep up with the demand you are placing on it.

Can stress or nervous system dysregulation stop me from healing from mold?

Yes, a nervous system stuck in fight, flight, or fawn can keep your body from prioritizing healing even if everything else is addressed. When you are that dysregulated it causes a steady cortisol dump around the clock, and your body is essentially acting like it's running from a tiger instead of focusing on eliminating toxins. This is a step a lot of people skip, and it's something I work on heavily with clients because chronic illness almost always comes with a dysregulated nervous system.

I'm doing everything right but not getting better, what am I missing?

Consider the three areas I walk through: whether you're still being exposed, whether your detox pathways are truly open and flowing, and whether your nervous system is regulated enough to let your body heal. Most people who feel stuck are missing one of these rather than failing at the whole process. It helps to assess each one individually instead of assuming you need to do more of everything at once.

Is it normal to feel like I'm failing when mold recovery isn't working?

It's an extremely common feeling, and I remember going through it myself during my own recovery. You start micromanaging every detail of your life, like worrying about a candle you lit, because you're desperate for progress. But feeling worse is not a sign of failure, it's a clue pointing you toward what actually needs to be adjusted.

How can I tell if I'm detoxing too fast?

If you are actively working on elimination but your symptoms are getting worse rather than better, you may be moving faster than your body can handle. This often happens when someone is out of exposure and feels motivated to push hard on detox without first confirming their pathways, like lymphatic flow, are fully open. The fix is to slow down and make sure elimination is actually happening rather than adding more toxins into circulation faster than your body can clear them.

What should I do differently if I'm not making progress in my mold recovery?

Start by reframing your symptoms as clues rather than evidence that you're doing something wrong, which helps take the emotional charge out of it and supports nervous system regulation too. Then methodically check the three areas: ongoing exposure, open detox pathways, and nervous system regulation. Addressing whichever of these is lagging, rather than pushing harder across the board, is usually what helps you start moving the needle again.

Aubree Felderhoff: Welcome back to Mold Free Mom. Today for our QA episode, I have a very common question. I see it all the time. And it was something that I wondered myself during my road to recovery. And that is I feel worse than when I even started the process of trying to recover. Am I doing something wrong? It's a common question, And it can be really scary because if you're doing all of the work and doing all of the things that you think are the right things to do and yet you feel worse off than when you started. You start to wonder if you're failing, if you're missing something. For me, it was a lot of targeted internal, I'm doing something wrong. I'm not perfect on my diet. It was the candle I lit the other day. You start to really micromanage your life. And that's really not what healing is about. But I understand because I've been there and you're just so desperate to get well. And when you don't feel like you're making traction, it begins to really make you wonder if it's something that you are doing. So the first thing I recommend if this question is something that you're wondering yourself is I want you to take a step back. And I want you to really consider the facts of your situation. Because oftentimes, whenever we are aggressively working so hard and fighting so hard to get well, it does point to. A few different variables that I see pretty consistently across the board. And like I said, I've been guilty of doing all of these. But the first thing that it could point to is that you're still being exposed. And that's usually one of the top things. If you're doing all of the right things, you're following the protocol, you're doing the right steps, you're addressing all parts of the healing journey, and yet you're still not really making progress and maybe even feeling worse, it could point to continued exposure. The second thing that it could point to is the fact that you're moving too fast, that you are doing a lot of the right things, but you're being too aggressive. And your body is not able to keep up with reducing the amount of toxins in your body. I see this a lot with clients who have not made sure to open all of their detox pathways. And so they're actively doing things to help their body eliminate toxins. Maybe they're out of exposure and now they're really gung ho on trying to get everything out of their body so their body can start to heal. And yet their body just cannot keep up with that demand, And so they end up Feeling worse. And the third thing that I see is someone that is doing all the right things. Maybe they're out of exposure. Maybe their detox pathways are open. They're eliminating well. They've got lymphatic flow moving appropriately, and yet they're still not feeling better, maybe even feeling worse. It could come down to the fact that their nervous system is still trapped in fight and flight, that they are extremely dysregulated, and the body is not going to. Prioritize healing and eliminating toxins and moving back into balance if you are essentially telling your body that you're running from a tiger. It's not the way our body is wired. And a lot of people skip this step of really working on getting the nervous system to go back into alignment and bringing down that fight, flight, and fawn. Response, which in turn causes this massive cortisol dump, around the clock when you're as dysregulated as I was. And so we've got to look at addressing that nervous system picture. If you're someone that's done everything else and yet isn't really moving the needle, It's a huge piece that I work on with my clients in the program because pretty consistently across the board, if you're someone that's been dealing with chronic illness for a long period of time. you've got a dysregulated nervous system. So when you are looking to assess, okay, why am I not feeling well? I want you to consider those three areas. Looking at your current living situation and making sure you're not still being exposed either by active mold or maybe even just contaminated items that were not cleaned, maybe a missing step in a remediation protocol, but making sure that you're not still getting active exposure, making sure that your detox pathways are completely open. And flowing so that as you are beginning to eliminate these toxins, you're not getting clogged up and re-exposing yourself. And then third, making sure that your body is really primed to heal, that your nervous system is regulated, that you've got strong vagal nerve toning, and that your body is in a safe. And prime position to help you eliminate these toxins And at the end of the day, guys, I want you to remember that feeling worse, it isn't a sign that you're failing. It's just a sign that you need to adjust. And so I know it can be hard to view it this way, but if you can begin to view these signs and these symptoms as clues in your journey to healing, it will really help you to take the emotional response out of this, which in turn helps with our nervous system regulation with healing, and begin to really pinpoint what area needs to be adjusted. Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner | Mold Recovery Concierge | Certified Primal Health Coach | Master Personal Trainer

Aubree spent 12 years and more than $250,000 searching for answers to a mystery chronic illness that 30-plus doctors couldn't solve. The first culprit was a mycotoxin-overloaded home that triggered a cascade of symptoms nobody could trace back to the source. After finally identifying the connection, remediating, and rebuilding her health, she faced a second exposure years later when water damage in her next home brought the symptoms flooding back.

That second experience is what shaped everything. She found a physician who understood antifungal treatment, completed neuroplasticity training, and fully recovered. Having navigated mold illness twice, from two different sources, she understands both how it starts and how it ends.

Aubree is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP), a Certified Primal Health Coach, NASM Certified Trainer, and Cooper Clinic Certified. Before mold illness defined her life, she spent 14 years in elite fitness as a national champion collegiate gymnast. She brings that same discipline and evidence-based approach to mold recovery, helping families get clear answers faster, without the decade of wrong turns she endured.
